Bulbophyllum lasiochilum- 365 days of orchids – day 1857

This is a small growing bulbophyllum with large and dramatic flowers. The flowers are produced singly on thin stems from the base of more recent bulbs. Once a plant has become a bit of a specimen it gives a lovely display.

As you can see the we grow the species mounted and find that it enjoys warm temperatures and lots of water during the summer growing season. An easy way to give a wetter summer and a dryer winter is to move mounted plants lower in the summer where they get more os a soaking and higher ion the winter where they can dry out more.

Bulbophyllum lasiochilum is found across South East Asia from India, through Myanmar and Thailand to Malaysia. It grows in warm forests with a distinct dry season.

As well as the long lasting and fascinating flowers the species is attractive when not in flower thanks to the thick, dark, glossy, single leaves on stout little bulbs.
