Stelis ciliolata (red form) – 365 days of orchids – day 1785

This wonderful miniature orchid produces masses of dark red flowers covered in grey hairs (hence the name)

Stelis ciliolata is endemic to Ecuador where it is found in wet forests from 1500 to 2400m and we find it straight forward when kept cool and well watered. Like many small orchids from wet forests the summer can be stressful for plants and we work hard to reduce heat stress with shading and heavy watering. Plants are loving our cool wet December and producing lots of new leaves along with the masses of flowers.
