Schoenorchis scolopendria – 365 days of orchids – day 1589

This unusual species is a miniature that hugs the bark of its mount and produces a creeping stem of alternate leaves (giving the species its name meaning millipede like).

The flowers are small but bright pink and produced over a long period when the plant is happy.

Schoenorchis scolopendria is native to northern Laos and Vietnam where it grows in warm evergreen forest on the trunks of trees. The species was first described in 2012 and we are keen to produce seed to make the species widely available in the UK.
