Masdevallia tovarensis – 365 days of orchids – day 1797
We have a second Christmas masdevallia today. This unusual species is Masdevallia tovarensis which produces flowers in ones and twos on flower spikes that flower repeatedly for several years.
Masdevallia tovarensis is new to 365 days and it is lovely that we keep finding new species to feature amongst our collection of about 1000 species. Masdevallia tovarensis is endemic to Venezuela where it grows in cool wet forest from 1600m to 2400m and so is ideally suited to life in our Cool Americas section with a minimum of 12C and vents opening at 20C.
If you grow the species remember not to remove the flower spikes until they are completely dead and brown
