Keeping your orchids happy on the hottest day of the year
Today is forecast to be really hot and, as we have found on our expeditions, many orchids from tropical mountains enjoy daytime temperatures in the mid 20s and not the Mid 30s we are expecting today.
Don’t panic – plants are pretty good at cooling themselves by transpiration as long as they have plenty of water at their roots. In our greenhouse the hottest day will also be the wettest day and I watered everything well this morning and will water again in the heat of the day. Give your plants lots of fresh air too. Excessive humidity reduces the plants ability to respire so too much humidity will cause your plants to overheat.
Saying all this, many of our warmer growing orchids from lowland forest are loving the heat and sunlight and are growing before our eyes.
