Growing Coelogynes on a windowsill

Since we opened our online shop a number of gardeners new to growing orchid species have been asking about growing plants indoors. It would be lovely if people sent photographs and short descriptions of their current methods and I can share them here.

For starters I have my Coelogyne windowsill – it is the toilet windowsill – East Facing with the window open all year for ventilation and keeping the Coelogynes nice an cool. I water twice a week with rainwater, and weak feed in the summer, with additional spraying of the compost top.

Coelogyne nitida is flowering now and Coelogyne cristata is in its growing phase.

  1. Agnes Jones says:

Are they planted in clay pots Simon?

    • Simon Pugh-Jones says:

Yes – they grew out of the large coffee cups (with holes drilled in the base and terracotta pots come in useful half pot heights. With terracotta it is essential to use rain water to avoid salt build up.
