Orchid workshops at MRSM day 1

Today we start our orchid workshops with our MRSM student partners. Each of the Mendip and Writhlington students has devised a workshop session with practicals and worksheets. Today we are delivering four of these workshops.

Ed Jones is running his workshop on making growing media and here students Alwin, Stella and Earl are heating the media they have made before sterilising it.

Eleanor’s workshop is on Orchid seed biology and MRSM students Maura Quinn and Ajman are using the WiFi Camera and microscope to investigate their seed.

Harris has a workshop on orchid lifecycle and Hannah’s is Health and Safety in the Orchid Lab. Maya and Filey are working on their safety policy.

Joe has developed a practical workshop on TZ viability testing. Nina, Najihah and Fahyim are working on Dendrobium seed.

Both student teams are doing an amazing job and as a teacher it is a joy to see so much learning going on. Both sets of students will be presenting their work to VIPs and school student next week.

So encouraging to know these younger generations divided by the huge distance between them are co-operatively learning the skills and techniques so necessary for habitat and plant survival. The international language of orchids.
