Ionopsis utricularoides – 365 days of orchids – day 859

This delightful miniature has a wide distribution through Central and South America as well as the Caribbean Islands. Is found from sea level up to about 1000m and we have seen it on school expeditions to Costa Rica.

The species flowers very quickly from seed and is a coloniser of fruit trees and coffee bushes and it was on coffee bushes in Costa Rica that we spotted it while waiting for a bus.

We grow plants in our Warm Americas Section in a tiny pot although the plant scrambles around above the pot. The amount of flower is extraordinary for such a tiny plant.
