365 days of orchids – day 274 – Dendrochilum cobbianum
This stunning orchid species is native to the Philippines where it grows in damp evergreen forest above 1200m altitude.
Flowers are produced from the centre of new growths every autumn and this year our large plant has 52 flower spikes with a total of over 2000 flowers. The flowers have a strong and rather perculiar smell that remind me of overheated electrics.
This plant won Best Species at the British Orchid Congress last year in Norwich and will hopefully have even more flowers for the next Congress which will be at Writhlington on 3rd and 4th November 2018
