WSBEorchids

365 days of orchids – day 116 – Rynchostylis retusa

This member of the Vanda family has a very wide distribution from India through South East Asia to Malaysia and the Philippines. We have seen the species in Sikkim where it grows in hot tropical valleys up to 1000m on the lower branches of large trees exposed to high light levels. This area experiences warm dry winters and hot wet summers and so we water the plant heavily in summer and just keep it from shrivelling in the winter. The plant is very happy in a basket in our Warm Asia section.

Our plant is a first flowering seedling and as it grows larger the flower spikes will get longer as will the leaves.
